A. Lange and Söhne was founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, near Dresden, Germany. The innovative young craftsman pursued precision and accuracy above all else, and was the first to introduce both the metric system and the division of labor to watch manufacturing.
Lange’s greatest contribution was the invention of the three quarter plate in 1864. Allowing all the arbors of the wheel train to be kept in stable contact, the three quarter plate gives the movement more stability, and is now considered a hallmark of quality for Glashütte watches.
