More About Van Cleef & Arpels
The Van Cleef & Arpels’ Maison was founded in 1896, but its true origin was in the marriage of Estelle Arpels, the daughter of a precious stone dealer, and Alfred van Cleef, the son of a stone cutter. Shortly after their wedding in 1895, the firm was joined by Estelle’s brothers, and in 1906 they registered the “Van Cleef & Arpels” trademark in Paris. Van Cleef & Arpels remained a family run business until 1999 when it was purchased by the high end Swiss luxury goods dealer Compagnie Financiere Richemont.
One of the many contributions Van Cleef & Arpels has made to the history of fine jewelry is the minaudière. This accessory was a type of vanity case made from gold or silver and adorned with precious stones, and they became incredibly popular after their introduction in the 1930s. Perhaps VCA’s most famous contribution to jewelry design is their signature “Invisible Setting,” a patented method for setting precious stones from the back that eliminates any visible support.
