About Breguet Watches
Breguet is a luxury watch maker with an unparalleled history of excellence and innovation. One of the oldest surviving watch-making brands, Breguet was founded in 1775 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, a craftsman widely considered to be the greatest watchmaker of all time.
One of the earliest innovations offered by Breguet was the first properly functioning self-winding watch, the Perpétuelle, in 1780. In 1801, Breguet famously patented the tourbillon, a mechanism that not only counters the adverse effects of gravity on accuracy, but is still included in many fine watches today as a demonstration of a watchmaker’s virtuosity.
Other innovations from Breguet included the flat hammers and circular gongs used in nearly all minute repeaters, and the pare-chute shock-protection mechanism — the basis for all modern shock protection systems.
Breguet watches are known not only for their high quality, but for a simple aesthetic, often featuring coin edge cases and guilloché dials. Breguet chose simple, slender Arabic numerals. And in 1783, they introduced the famous pomme hands — narrow, pointed indicators with apple shaped holes at their tips. Now universally known as “Breguet hands,” they are used not only by Breguet but by brands like Patek Philippe and Cartier as well.
Today, Breguet is owned by Swatch Group. Thanks to its integration with movement maker Nouvelle Lemania, the renamed Manufacture Breguet produces all its movements in house. Contemporary models offered include the 2013 released La Tradition Tourbillon (a model featuring a large, titanium caged tourbillon), and the 2014 Classique Chronométrie 7727, with a revolutionary, magnetic based escapement.
Should I Auction My Breguet Watch?
When someone wants to sell a Breguet watch worth five or six figures, the first inclination is to sell that watch at auction. But as we explain in our article on Auctioning Diamond Jewelry & Watches, an auction house is often not the best way to sell an expensive timepiece.
If you are selling a diamond or timepiece worth millions of dollars, an auction house can be a good way to attract collectors and potentially start a bidding war that drives up the price. However, for most people who are selling a Breguet watch or other luxury timepiece, it is quicker and easier to get a great price by selling your watch directly to a professional buyer like Diamond Estate.
With a streamlined business approach and 30+ years of expertise in valuable watches, we often can get our clients similar cash amounts to what they would have received via an auction house, and in a fraction of the time.
